Lapp, Amanda E. Borkholder
August 29, 1941 - April 11, 2021
Amanda was the daughter of the late Eli and Catherine (Coblentz) Borkholder. She married Mervin Lapp April 26, 1962, at her brother, Daniel's home, in Nappanee, Indiana.
She was a faithful member of the Heritage Mennonite Church, in New Concord, Ohio. She was a loving, caring, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
Amanda was a woman whose life exemplified hospitality and service. She and Mervin readily welcomed visitors, and boarders into their home. She served by ministering to many burn victims, and was ready to go day and night. She cared for many elderly and sick people over the years, including her mother-in-law, sister Ada, and sister-in-law, Bertha. She will be remembered for her kind words, advice, and caring touch. Her quiet ways, and bubbling laughter added spice to life. Her grandchildren treasure time spent with her doing puzzles, fishing, and playing card games (and she was always a good sport). She faithfully remembered each one's birthday, and always sent a birthday card.
Her children will remember her example, and legacy, and hold them dear to their hearts.
Though she never asked for honor in this life, we know the glory she received as she stepped into Heaven far surpass any earthly honor we can give.
This was Amanda's prayer: "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."
We rejoice in her faithful testimony.

Liechty, Miriam Jeanelle Kuhns Zehr
February 14, 1928 - January 3, 2021
Miriam Jeanelle (Kuhns Zehr) Liechty, age 92, passed away on January 3, 2021 at Swiss Village in Berne.
Miriam was born Feb 14, 1928 in La Junta, CO to Anna (Shupe) and Allen Kuhns. She was the youngest of nine siblings. Her childhood was spent in multiple locations throughout Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. She attended high school at the Hesston Academy, and graduated in 1950 from the La Junta Mennonite School of Nursing. After graduation, she was employed at the Mennonite Deaconess Hospital in Beatrice, NE. While there she met and married Edmund Zehr, who was serving as hospital administrator. She and Edmund had 3 young children and a fourth child on the way when Edmund died suddenly in 1957. After his death, Miriam relocated to Goshen Indiana, and during the next 2 years she took advanced training at Wesley Memorial Hospital and Northwestern University in Chicago, to become an anesthesia practitioner. She completed training in 1959, becoming one of the nation’s first Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.
After graduation, Miriam accepted a Nurse Anesthetist position at the Caylor-Nickel Clinic in Bluffton IN. She chose to settle her young family in Berne and attend First Mennonite Church in Berne. There she met Robert (Bob) Liechty, whom she married in February 1961 after a short courtship. Bob lovingly adopted the four Zehr children, then ages 3 through 8, and he and Miriam were subsequently blessed with two additional children.
In addition to the Bluffton Clinic, Miriam worked as a Nurse Anesthetist at Jay County Hospital and at Swiss Village as a nurse. She also received training and certification in tax preparation and helped many people through her small business, Liechty Tax Service.
Miriam had a curious intellect and an active mind. She was a constant learner and loved a challenge. Her family marveled at her resolve to fix an appliance, mend an item of clothing, or repair any broken item. She was a creative “engineer” at heart, often inventing ways to improve the function of things or to create new gadgets. She was also a talented seamstress and spent countless hours knitting, crocheting and needle-working. Her children and grandchildren treasure the many beautiful handmade gifts she made for them.
Miriam and Bob were married nearly 60 years. During retirement they enjoyed traveling internationally and throughout the US in their motor home. They spent many winters in Florida and Texas where they made many friends volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
Most of all, Miriam was a committed and devoted follower of Jesus. She had a beautiful alto voice and filled the home with her hymns and songs. She loved fiercely and prayed fervently for her family, for those less fortunate, and for those facing challenges. Perhaps because of the hardships she had faced in her own life, Miriam had a heart for those who were struggling and would go out of her way to share her love and acceptance. Her faith was strong and steady, and she did not shy away from examining and stretching her understanding. In times of doubt, Miriam always chose love as her guiding principle.
Miriam is survived by her loving husband Robert (Bob); her 6 children and their spouses, Edward (Mary Purves) and C. Daniel (Naomi Wilansky) Liechty, Mary (Peter) Graber, Martha (Paul) Conrad, Margaret (Phillip) Sprunger, and Janet (Philip Martens) Liechty; 13 grandchildren, Gretchen, Karl, Adele (Ed), Hannah (Dan), Emily, Nathan, Naomi (Mary), Jesse, Caitlin (Martha), Conrad, Carsten (Margaret), Raina, and Rex (Janet); and 10 great-grandchildren.
Miriam was preceded in death by her first husband Edmund Zehr, her parents Anna and Allen Kuhns, 5 sisters, and 3 brothers.
Due to COVID-19 public health and safety concerns, services and burial will take place privately with the immediate family. A link to view the memorial service will be available after the service at the First Mennonite Church website http://www.firstmennonite.org
Preferred memorials are to Camp Friedenswald, Mennonite Disaster Service, or Swiss Village Samaritan Fund.
Liechty, Russel
December 15, 1930 - January 13, 2021
Russel Liechty, Dean of Students Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Education who worked and taught at Goshen College for 38 years, died at home in Goshen on January 13, [2021]. He was 90.
Russel Allen Liechty was born on a farm near Pettisville, Ohio on Dec. 15, 1930, the last of nine children of Joseph and Emma (Frey) Liechty. The Liechty family belonged to West Clinton Mennonite Church, which nurtured Russ in the Christian faith that would undergird his life. Another early influence was helping out in his father’s auto and farm equipment business in Archbold, where he acquired skills as a mechanic and a passion for vehicles which he pursued as a hobby, restoring numerous cars, trucks, and tractors through his lifetime. After graduating from Pettisville High School in 1948, he attended Goshen College where he studied sociology and met his future wife, Marjorie Schertz. Russ and Marge were married in 1953 and Russ accepted an invitation to serve as Assistant Dean of Men at Goshen College. In 1954 the couple had their first son, Joe, and in 1957 moved to Columbus, Ohio where their daughter Jane was born and where Russ earned a master’s degree in counseling from Ohio State University in 1959. Returning to Goshen, the couple had their third child, Mark, before moving again, this time to Madison, Wisconsin. There Russ earned a PhD in counseling and behavioral studies from the University of Wisconsin and the family added its fourth child, Dan, both in 1964.
Returning to Goshen College in 1964, Liechty served as Dean of Students until 1978 when he became Director of Counseling, a role that allowed him to fully engage his training, skills and personal commitment to serving students. Hundreds of Goshen College graduates remember him as a trusted listener and advisor.
During their Goshen College years Russ and Marge also undertook numerous international assignments. In what became a defining family experience, the Liechtys spent a sabbatical year (1969-70) at Woodstock School in Mussoorie, India, where Russ served as counselor and the entire family established strong ties to South Asia that have persisted across generations. Russ and Marge led two Study-Service Term units for Goshen College: in Belize (summer 1974) and China (fall 1983). In 1977-78, and again in 1985-86, Russ and Marge returned to South Asia where they served with the United Mission to Nepal. Working as a team, they walked hundreds of miles of mountain trails to provide counseling services to Mission workers in far-flung locations, establishing close friendships with Nepalis and people from around the world.
For decades Russ and Marge were also known for the hospitality they extended to Goshen College students, especially international and third-culture students who enjoyed countless meals, ice cream parties, and fireside gatherings in the Liechty home. Members of College Mennonite Church their entire adult lives, Russ and Marge taught and coordinated the CMC college-age Sunday School class for almost forty years. Russ and Marge also provided a home for students attending Bethany Christian School and coordinated the Friendship Family Program for the college’s international students.
“Russ had a quiet grace and a sincere personal interest in students,” said Vic Stoltzfus, former Goshen College president. “In retirement, he, with his wife Marge, were pioneer founders of the International Student Ministry Group [at College Mennonite Church]. He and Marge supported international students through social times, meals, and even responded to medical needs. He was a beloved servant leader.”
After Russ’ retirement in 1993 the couple took up what they sometimes described as their most challenging and rewarding assignment, at the Chicago Mennonite Learning Center where, with Marge’s active partnership, Russ volunteered as principal from 1993-96. Returning to a new, smaller home in Goshen, Russ and Marge continued to relate to GC students, resuming their engagement with the college-age Sunday School class at College Mennonite Church, and helping to promote and coordinate scholarship funding for international students. Retirement also provided time for Russ to devote to other passions including restoring antique vehicles. Among them was a 1919 Dodge Brothers Touring car that, over almost fifty years, Russ painstakingly disassembled and restored to pristine condition. Also notable was a lovingly restored 1947 Dodge semi truck tractor, like one he had driven as a boy in Ohio, which Russ loved to drive in Goshen parades.
Russ also enjoyed gardening and yard work which (with Marge) he pursued with the same level of perfectionism as his vehicles. (One of his brothers once jokingly condemned Russ’ horticultural skills by noting that not even a weed would grow in his garden!)
With Marge, Russ also enjoyed travel, often combining trips to historic locations with visits to their children and grandchildren as well as their many nieces, nephews, cousins, and old friends spread around the country and the world. Their work to maintain family linkages and friendships was much appreciated, and will be sincerely missed by many.
Russ Liechty is survived by his wife Marjorie; four children and their spouses: Joseph and Linda of Goshen, Indiana, Jane and Wayne Fisher of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Mark and Laura (Hostetler) of Oak Park, Illinois, and Daniel and Jill Koop Liechty of Goshen, Indiana; eight grandchildren: Anna Sawatsky (Joe), Aaron Liechty (Kelli Kol), Jacob Curtis (Michelle), Matthew Fisher (Sinett Sun), Naomi Liechty, and Emma, Elsie, and Cormac Koop Liechty; six great grandchildren: Isaac, Moses, Levi, and Jesse Sawatsky, and Fionn and Aislinn Liechty; and two sisters-in-law: Loveda Liechty and Treva Liechty.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the International Student Ministry Group at College Mennonite Church. Checks made payable to CMC can be sent to College Mennonite Church, 1900 S Main Street, Goshen, IN. 46526. Please note "Russ Liechty Memorial" on your check. Online gifts can be made at https://collegemennonite.org/give/ (choose Special Funds and International Student Aid, “memorial” on memo line).
Due to public health concerns, a closed service will be held for the immediate family. An open memorial service will be planned for a later date, when family and friends can safely gather.

Longenecker, Nathan C.
About 2002 - October 8, 2021
Nathan C. Longenecker, age 19, passed away on Friday evening, October 8, 2021, at home with his family around him. He was under the care of hospice following a courageous eight-month journey with brain cancer. He was the son of Lynn and Laurie (Eshleman) Longenecker, brother of Maria Longenecker and Jesse Longenecker, Lancaster, PA.
Nathan was a first-year student at Eastern Mennonite University, Harrisonburg, VA, when he was diagnosed in February 2021. He was studying mathematics and computer science and was honored as a Yoder/Webb scholar receiving a full tuition scholarship. In his short time at EMU, he found a home with friends and professors, and was just beginning to explore many hopes and dreams for the future.
He graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School in 2020, where he played soccer, enjoyed production adventures with the tech crew, sang tenor in the Campus Chorale, and played violin in the pit orchestra.
Nathan found joy in disc golf, longboarding, fishing, family camping trips, board games and time with his cousins. He spent some of his formative years in Santa Cruz, Bolivia where he lived from ages 6-9 with his family. He was a member of Blossom Hill Mennonite Church, a faith community that nurtured and loved him from birth to death, rooted in the foundation that he is “known and loved by God”.
Nathan was a gentle, kind, deep thinker. He was light-hearted but could also be fiercely competitive. Friends gave the following words to describe him: intelligent, considerate, beautiful, stubborn, talented, lovable, persuasive, selfless, go-with-the-flow, warm and light-bringing, nurturing and helpful.
He leaves behind a loving network of family, friends and neighbors, including his maternal grandparents, Leon and Melba Eshleman, Manheim PA, and paternal grandparents, Charles and Barbara Longenecker, Lititz, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 24 at 2:30 pm at Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond Street, Akron, PA. Visitation time from 1:00–2:00 pm prior to the service. Masks are required when inside the church. A private burial was held at the Akron Mennonite Church Cemetery.
